Over the years I learned that autonomy is what I need in my life. It's where I feel safe.
Here are some of the rules I consider as relevant in this context.
- Don't beg people to do better. Stand your ground and show what better looks like through your actions.
- Directness works only when intimacy already exits.
- When we see our uniqueness as a virtue only then do we find peace.
When people cannot control me, they often try to control how others perceive me. My peace is more important than their perspective. I don't walk away to win an argument but to win my life back. Those who truly know my heart will see through a one-sided narrative without me ever having to defend myself.
I don't owe anyone a rebuttal to their version of the truth. Some people misrepresent me to feel better about themselves. And over time, the way this person treats others reveals their character more than any story they tell.
I am not responsible for the version of me that exists in their mind. I am only responsible for the person I am becoming today.
